TM
This year's 2012 MDR Halibut Derby
The May 14th 2011 Halibut Derby was won by a whopper!Topped by Don Kobabe with a 43.7 lb fish.
Second place was a Kayak fisherman, Tony Copos, Thanks goes out to all fishermen, fisherwomen and the many volunteers who did great to raise funds for Youth Fishing and Conservation efforts. A Special Thanks to all the businesses that sponsored the MDR Halibut Derby with gifts. You all Rock!
Our Halibut Seminar: Each Year the MDRA fishing club hosts a special fishing seminar at the meeting just before the Derby to help anglers increase their chances of hooking and landing the big one during the MDR Save the Halibut Derby. In 2011 the May 14 meeting featured local fishing pros Dick Schaffer and Captain David Yumori who presented to the club and guests lots of their secrets and local knowledge about fishing in the Santa Monica Bay. Schaffer owned Purfields Tackle Shop for years. David Yumori, AKA, Captain Midnight, runs The Slammer, a 6-pack fishing operation out of the Marina. Schaffer and Yumori are both on the water every week and spending an hour learning their winning techniques will be invaluable. The seminar will begin at 7 pm in the meeting room at Burton Chase Park at the end of Mindanao Way in Marina Del Rey. Arrive early to get a good seat and maybe get some one-on-one time with these pros. Recent Halibut Fishing Seminar on May 10th 2012 Past Halibut Fishing Tips - David Bacan
The Marina Del Rey Halibut Derby is the oldest and largest Halibut Derby in Southern California. This event is produced by the Marina Del Rey Anglers fishing club and the many volunteers. The derby is how the fishing club raises money for charity. Most of the funds raised goes to support MDRA Youth Fishing Program & White Seabass Enhancement Program. MDR Anglers Youth Fishing Committee plans, runs and mans many boat trips each summer. Working to take close to 1,000 kids out on fishing trips each summer. We go out of MDR on the Betty-O. Some are from various youth groups. Some are from inner city organizations. Some are from disadvantaged or special needs programs. When these young people are out on the ocean with a caring volunteer mentor they often see a new side of the world that they live in. Caring adults teaching them a way to play and enjoy nature in a healthy and wholesome way. It can be very special for the mentors as well. It is a great experience to teach a kid to fish.

The 35th Annual Marina Del Rey Halibut Derby held April 4th and 5th 2009 was an outstanding success. We were blessed with fine weather for the event. Plenty of bait was available in the bait receivers. The sun came out. And so did the true fishing loyalists, the real die-hards, the great fishing patriots. They came out despite the bad economy, high fuel prices, and low fish counts. The MDRA Board of Directors salutes these anglers for their support of the 35th Annual Halibut Derby...
The 34th Annual Marina Del Rey Halibut Derby was just held on April 5th and 6th 2008. A big 37.3 pound fish took the lead early and held on for the best fish of the derby.
